Looking at Other People's Research Excursions

The first research excursion that I viewed was Caterina Newman's essay about the Muslim burial traditions.  I learned that where a body is buried is significant to Muslims who live in Europe.  Where a person is buried often signals some type of attachment to that place, such as it being a home.  In connection to Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, Aneeka wanted Parvaiz's body to be buried in Britain because that was the place that was considered his home.  Shamsie was illustrating something that many British Muslims consider important rather than just Aneeka and Parvaiz.  I learned that this is something that relates to the Muslim culture and belonging.  I think that this research showed that the idea of the burial in the novel connects to something on a larger scale.

The next research excursion that I viewed was Sena's research on ISIS recruitment.  I learned that ISIS does a lot of recruitment through social media, and the recruiters try to target younger people who might struggle with identity or having meaning in their lives.  Minorities who might feel that they do not fit in with other people are also targeted.  Recruiters use guilt to try to get Muslims to join because they try to make it seem like they owe it to their religion to join.  Those who are recruited usually do not have a lot of education.  The research connected to Parvaiz in the novel because he had some of these vulnerable characteristics that made him an easy target for ISIS recruitment.  For example, he did not have much meaning in his life, felt that he did not connect to his family, and did not have the opportunity to get a higher education.

(I can't figure out how to get a hyperlink to work for this one.)

  1. Huh, I had no idea that the location of burial actually had a religious connection. That could also further explain why Aneeka cared so much about where her brother was buried. Thanks for sharing that observation.

  2. I also looked at Sena's presentation of ISIS recruitment and was astonished hearing the details of the recruitment process. At first I couldn't believe that the people they recruit would be in the same age category as I, it made me scared picturing people I know who'd fit into their vulnerable profile.

  3. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my research excursion :)
I learned a lot from Sena's presentation, and I think you summarized it well. Mental manipulation does play a major role.

  4. I also looked at Caterina's presentation and it taught me why burying Parvaiz in ENgland was so important!
