Open Prompt: Music
Music can be fun to listen to and can sometimes be relaxing. I think that music can improve my mood and relieve any of my stresses. However, whenever I am asked about the type of music I enjoy listening to, I never know how to respond to that question. My music taste seems to be all over the place as there are certain songs in certain genres that I like, and certain songs in genres that I do not like. I do not have a set genre that I listen to. It just depends on my mood or what I want to listen to at the moment. What types of music do you all listen to?
Even though I think that music is fun to listen to, I am unable to play any instruments. I really want to learn how to play the piano. The piano can create beautiful sounds from what I have heard, and it would be great to understand how to play it. I started trying to learn to play the piano by asking my sister to teach me. Other instruments that I think would be fun to play are the violin or the guitar. What instruments do you play?
I have heard that some people enjoy listening to music while studying. For me, I usually cannot study with music on because it distracts me, but I can listen to music while doing mindless homework assignments that do not require much thinking. Do you all like listening to music while studying or doing homework?
I can totally relate to loving music but not being able to play any instruments myself. I actually tried learning how to play the guitar in middle school but I wasn't very good at it. And your third paragraph is SPOT ON!
ReplyDeleteI also am a huge fan of music, especially the way it can change the way I feel. It's this property of music that made me want to become a musician, as such I enumerate myself in a number of instruments. I read that you were interest in learning piano, my only advice with that is practice a lot. Piano is very hard to master, so if you want to play in a way that moves people I suggest you practice at least thirty minutes a day.
ReplyDeleteMusic can totally transform my mood. I think its so powerful! Right now I'm in a phase where all I listen to is rock from the 60s/70s.
ReplyDeleteIn middle school I played the flute, and while I might be able to still play today... I think I have totally forgotten how to read music. I totally applaud your efforts to learn piano!
Music is absolutely one of the biggest parts of my life (even though I can't play any instruments). Some of my favorite songs right now are Hands Me Down by Mac Miller, Mr. Hollywood by Joji, and At My Worst by Pink Sweat$. Unfortunately, I can't really listen to songs with words while I do homework, so I end up listening to classical or lo-fi!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way when people ask me what my favorite song is! I listen to so many different artists and genres that it really depends on how I'm feeling. I love to listen to music while I study, because it seems like white noise that both covers up outside distractions and makes my studying more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteMusic has definitly become very important during quarentine and can change your mood in just a few minutes. If you have the time and patience, I for sure recommend learning some piano or even just how to play a few songs. I wish i never quit but sometimes I will sit at a piano and play and its like therapy in the way that playing leaves me tired but fulfilled.
ReplyDeleteI've realized that I've grown into the habit of just having Spotify open 24/7 because I listen to music so often. Like you, however, I have zero musical abilities of my own when it comes to instruments. I used to play the piano when I was younger and I took lessons for four years, but after that I didn't have access to a piano for a while and I never took up the habit again. That's honestly one of my biggest regrets in life if I'm being honest, but I admire your intentions to start! Maybe I'll take it up again one day...
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate to your varied music taste. Whenever someone asks what kind of music I like, I just reply with 'pop' because they stop asking more questions. In reality though, I like listening to a wide variety of hand picked songs from different genres (including non-Western music, as I play the Tabla, an Indian drum). Like you mentioned, I also can't study with music playing, unless it doesn't require too much concentration.
ReplyDeleteI really love your passion for music. I love listening to all types, except really country. I also wish I could play instruments better. I have an older brother who is amazing at playing instruments, like the alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, piano, xylophone, vibraphone, and glockenschpiel, and because of that teachers put WAY too much pressure on me. I played the flute for five miserable years and the guitar last year (which I loved but disliked my teacher) and I have always wanted to learn the cello.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the genres thing; I like every kind of music for the most part too. I'm trying to learn the guitar right now, which I've wanted to do for years, so we'll see how that goes. I actually have to listen to music when I'm doing homework/studying, or I have to have background noise, otherwise my brain doesn't have enough stimulation to get the task done efficiently. I also hate the sound of my typing after a while, so I need distraction from that.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with so many things you said here. Firstly, I'm a singer and songwriter so my taste in music varies in everything from broadway to rap to indie to 80s music. Put anything on and chances are I will enjoy it. But if someone were to ask me what kind of music I like or who my favorite singer is, I would freeze up because it varies dramatically based on my mood and creativity levels. I've found that while painting nothing makes me happier than listening to Taylor Swift, whereas when I'm with friends I prefer the Euphoria soundtrack or rap. Another thing I connected with is being able to listen to music whilst doing homework but not while studying. Personally, I find music to be a great way to get in the zone, but if I am studying or writing a paper or doing anything where I need to focus intently, music will only mess me up!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, if I listen to a certain genre for long enough I eventually will become more prone to like it. I primarily listen to a lot of hip hop/R&B but I feel that's because I grew up listening to it. Every now and then, I do pop on music when I'm doing homework, but only instrumental versions as words will blur my eventually blur my focus.
ReplyDeleteI love this open discussion about music, which reveals how important it is to all of us. Music can be an incredibly powerful escape from the stressors and distractions of our daily lives, much as poetry or art can be. I have been listening to much more music since the pandemic, and have also been tuning in to a number of live music shows streamed--it's not the same as being in room where live music is performed, but it's something!

ReplyDeleteMusic is probably one of the most important things to me, if music wasn't a thing that existed I would not be the person I am today, I'd probably be pretty unhappy honestly. I do listen to music while studying but usually not anything with lyrics, or English lyrics at least. I've played trumpet in a jazz combo for the last 6 years but I stopped this last year, but who knows I might pick it up again. If you're interested in learning an piano you should go for it, small consistent efforts really pay off in the long run when learning an instrument!
