Reflection on Mini-Project
I did my midterm mini-project on the topic of masculinity standards, and I compared how these masculinity standards played out in both Sophocles' Antigone and Kamila Shamsie's Homefire. I specifically looked at how masculinity standards could have been toxic and how this affected the characters of Creon and Parvaiz. My main argument was that Antigone gave the message that toxic masculinity standards are harmful to men and that Homefire gave the message that toxic masculinity standards are also harmful but that there are some advantages to it. My format for this project was a standard essay of about five pages. From doing this midterm mini-project, I learned that I could take small pieces from the texts that might not seem very important or noticeable and turn them into a whole argument about what the texts are making a message about. From the workshop process, I thought it was good that my group members gave me feedback on what they thought was good about my topic. Also, specifically Mia gave me some good suggestions about what I should fix in my project like trying to make the project flow together more smoothly.
What I enjoyed most about doing the midterm mini-project was being able to put my annotations to use. I like how making those annotations was not pointless since it helped me a lot in doing this project. What I wish had gone better is making my essay's flow better, but it is not due until Sunday, so I will work on that.
Hello Kiana, it was really interesting what you decided to write for your midterm mini-project. I went down a different path and chose to wrote about prompt one, focusing exclusively on Home Fire, so it was refreshing to read about another case to this project. I hope this assignment changed the way you see the two texts for the better, being one of better understanding of the story's characters and premise.
ReplyDeleteWow, I would love to read your essay about this! The representations of masculinity in both pieces were also a standout for me, particularly with Parvaiz, so I am excited to see what your perspectives are. Also I agree with you about finding value in annotations in the long run—it saves so much time in the future!
ReplyDeleteHey Kiana, I love this topic and it is definitley a topic that needs to be honed in on in each pieces.
ReplyDeleteYour topic is so interesting. It is so crazy to me how many parallels there are in society nearly 3000 years after Antigone.
ReplyDeleteHooray for annotations, and using them to create a whole interpretation and argument!!
