Final Project Ideas

For my final project, I think that I would like to try using Neatline as my format.  Since we need to stretch our project across time and space, I think Neatline's map feature as well as its timeline feature will help make the time and space aspects more clear and visually appealing.  I have not done much with Neatline yet besides the 5 Neatline exercises that we have to do, so I think it would be interesting to try out this different format from my typical format of writing essays.

One idea that I have for my final project is to do research on female protagonists in literature.  I would base this off of the play of Sophocles' Antigone because I felt that the character of Antigone pushed for feminism in a world where men were more dominant.  I would look for other sources that have female protagonists as well.

Another idea that I have is to research different religions in literature.  I am not sure if this would work, but I would want to base it on Shamsie's Home Fire since this novel shows the religion of Islam and some of its features like the hijab or the other religious beliefs mentioned.  I would look at other religions from around the world like Christianity, Confucianism, Judaism, Hinduism, or Buddhism as some examples.

I do not know which idea to use yet or if I will end up using any of these ideas at all.  I still need to do some research and see if I can find good primary sources on these topics.

  1. I like your idea on female protagonists. I think you have a good way of deciding - by finding how many primary sources there is on either topic. Good luck!

  2. It's definitely nice to see that someone likes Neatline (I cannot relate). Also, studying religions from around the world sounds super interesting!

  4. I also want to try using Neatline for my final project, but I often end up reverting to essays because they are much more straightforward to conceive. I like your idea on exploring different religions throughout literature - this may be expanded upon by the next class reading as well.

  6. I'm also strongly considering using Neatline for my final project. Granted I do not yet selected a topic, but having the visual components and ability to move around pretty smoothly from concept to concept is enjoyable for me.

  7. You could pursue the world religions in literature topic by also thinking about genre: would you like to explore how different genres (poetry, fiction, plays, novels, romances, travel narratives, etc.) represent religions from around the world at different points in time? Or would you like to focus on one genre (like the novel) and find 4 of these from different time periods and different religions/geographical areas? Sounds very interesting!
