Microlecture 1 Part B
After viewing Microlecture 1 Part B, I thought it was interesting to see how indigenous storytelling was done in different ways. I thought that the star maps looked really cool, and it is interesting that they painted on deer hide. Additionally, Lone Dog's Buffalo Robe is told in a story of pictographs, and I think that using pictographs is also a cool way to tell stories. It is a lot different from storytelling in today's times. I wonder if I would be able to understand the pictographs if I tried to. I also think it was really cool to learn about the Peruvian Quipus because I had no idea that communicating could be done with strings as knots on the string could represent certain things like numbers. I am impressed with all of the creative ways of doing writing, and this is something that was really unfamiliar to me as I have always thought of writing as being with words. Learning about the Hiawatha Belt was also interesting since at first glance, it might just look like random shapes, but it actually tells a story of connecting different nations with peace. I never would have thought about it like that, and I think it is really interesting how Indigenous people used a lot of symbols or representations in order to tell stories. There is also another belt shown in the Microlecture, and the belt just looks like stripes at first glance, but it also tells a story of a treaty between two peoples. This Microlecture adds to my understanding of Indigenous literature because it shows how the idea of storytelling back then in the Indigenous culture was different from what we do today.
I'm in the same page with you of being fascinated in this micro lecture's reference to the old Native American items. Like you this lesson built on my knowledge of the Native American culture in a really fun and interesting way.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, I think the artifacts were so interesting looking!
ReplyDeleteThe belt was so interesting, and beautiful. At first glance, it was beautiful but I didn't know the deeper meaning of it until the microlecture which made me appreciate it more!
ReplyDeleteLike you mentioned, it's really interesting how these methods of writing show how limited our definition of 'writing' is today. I would have never thought that a belt could tell whole stories just using colors and symbols alone.
ReplyDeleteI loved learning and looking at the different artifacts. The belts were really interesting because it's so different from how we communicate now.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the ways indigenous people communicated were fascinating. It even seemed like some of their methods (especially the quipus) were more complicated than a written language.
ReplyDelete"I wonder if I would be able to understand the pictographs if I tried to" - This would be such a good idea for like a group project
