Microlecture 1 Part A There There

In Microlecture 1 Part A on Tommy Orange's There There, I thought it was interesting how storytelling in the Native American culture dates back to the start of the existence of Indigenous people.  It goes back to before the idea of print, so the definitions of "writing" or "storytelling" could differ.  One thing that struck out to me was how stories like Pocahontas do not portray what actually happened between Europeans and Native Americans, and I think it is terrible that society often hides the truth about Indigenous people.  Another thing that I thought was terrible was how Europeans pretended to see what they wanted to see rather than what they actually saw.  The causes of this problem include preconceived ideas, biases about European superiority, fear of the other, ignorance, as well as greed and violence.  I feel so bad for Indigenous people and what they had to go through with dealing with the ignorance, greed, and violence of colonizers.  There is also a lot that we do not know due to these Europeans like Columbus seeing what they wanted to rather than reality.  I also thought it was interesting to learn about the different precolumbian civilizations like Cahokia and the Mayan civilizations.  It makes me wonder what the world would be like today if Europeans had not taken their land away.  This adds to my understanding of There There because it gave me another example of the stories of Indigenous people not being true like how Tommy Orange gave the example of Thanksgiving.

  1. I'm with you on the frustration towards the misrepresentation of Native Americans in United States history. Also, I really enjoyed how you discussed more misrepresentation in history through the Cahokia and the Mayan civilizations.

  2. I think it is very important for people in the US (especially) to understand the violence of European colonization towards indigenous peoples, especially with Thanksgiving coming up.

    1. I agree, I am happy we are reading There There during this time of the month. Learning is one thing, but we need to retain what we learn! Associating what we learn with what is happening in our current life makes retention stronger.
