Hansu and Isak

In Min Jin Lee's book called Pachinko, Hansu and Isak both have a relationship with Sunja.

In my opinion, I dislike Hansu a lot, and I think that how he acted towards Sunja from the start was really weird and creepy. From the beginning, he would be at the market coincidentally whenever she was there, and he would just stare at her. He also would try to talk to her, and Sunja would not respond, but he would keep trying. I feel like if I was in Sunja's situation, I would be really uncomfortable. Also, the fact that he is like 34 years old, and she is 16 years old does not sit right with me at all. He also got Sunja pregnant while he had his own wife and kids back at home, and I think that cheating is disgusting, so I dislike him for cheating as well. I think it is nice of him to offer to give money to Sunja to help her out with the baby, but that does not redeem his character for me.

On the other hand, Isak seems like a better person than Hansu. I don't have a strong hate for him like I do for Hansu. Isak wanted to marry Sunja and give his last name to her and the child. He seems like a nice person so far since he wants to help out Sunja and the new child. I think that Isak is more respectful to Sunja than Hansu is.

  1. I agree with you on the frustration with Hansu. I can't stand reading about his character and his messed up actions. I think he's my least favorite character we've read in C&I.

  4. Hansu really doesn't have any redeeming characters. He's not only a pedophile, but he's dishonest, and he's a cheater.

  6. I like that you mentioned the money thing, but I think he only does that for the sake of HIS son (and it's his only son), not for Sunja
