Korea and Japan Relations: Yumi

Looking at the quote from Mozasu’s wife named Yumi, I think that for Koreans living in Japan, the fact that they are Korean is a factor that kinda works against them like other factors like economic status, gender, or race. Also, the quote seems to describe the relation between Koreans and Japan as a relationship with a stepmother and a child. When I think of stepmoms, it kinda reminds me of the mean stepmom from Cinderella.  In this way, I think that this quote shows that the Japanese are letting the Koreans live in Japan much like a stepmom is kinda forced to live with the stepdaughter or step son without really liking them. Much like in Cinderella, the stepdaughter(or step son) has to do everything right or else he or she gets in trouble from the stepmother. I think that this reminds me of how Koreans have to be extra good around the police because the police can be harsher towards them. The stepdaughter or stepson (who represents Koreans) may want to go against the stepmom (Japan), but that could result in getting into more trouble. I think that this is also similar to how Koreans have a tougher time living in Japan than the Japanese do because of prejudice. Relating back to the stepmother analogy, the stepdaughter or step son may also have a tougher time living in a household with the stepmother if the stepmother is not very nice to him or her. At least that is how I see it.

  1. Hey Kiana, I really like your Cinderella analogy and interaction between citizens from the two countries seems limited and hostile.

  2. The Cinderella analogy is so insightful, Kiana! It definitely illustrates that forced relationship and Koreans having to walk on eggshells in Japan in order to get by with as few struggles as possible.
